Blaser Lab for Microbiome Research - Your Support Matters
Our microbiome, the myriad diverse microorganisms that call us home, plays a critical role in our digestion, our immune responses and even how we think. It affects our immunity to infectious agents and our ability to combat other diseases. In short, our microbiome helps keeps us healthy.
Unfortunately, microbial diversity is slowly diminishing with ancient microbes gone 'missing'. This has been progressive due to modern technologies including use of antibiotics and changes accompanying urbanization. This loss has substantially increased our susceptibility to modern plagues, such obesity, diabetes, asthma, allergies and even some cancers. But what if we could prevent or reverse disease states by understanding and restoring the good microbes?
Dr. Martin Blaser is transforming the landscape of microbiome research by identifying and characterizing the key members of the microbiome essential to ensure long-term health, training the next generation of microbiome experts, and accelerating the application of scientific discoveries into therapeutics, precision nutrition, and practices that improve health broadly. With students and other trainees working on these problems under his guidance, the next generation of medical scientists is being trained with focus in the biology of the microbiome.
