Bio

Sleep is a virtually universal trait in the animal kingdom, but it is unknown if there is a single basic purpose that it fulfills in organisms as diverse as cnidarians, nematodes, fruit flies, fish, and mammals. While completing his undergraduate degree at Northeastern University, Nick became acquainted with the field of sleep research in the model organism Drosophila Melanogaster (fruit fly), and learned techniques of Drosophila husbandry during a co-op internship in the Pecot Lab at Harvard Medical School. He also became aware of various clues that have accumulated over the years in the scientific literature pointing to an intimate connection between sleep homeostasis and metabolism.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree in 2019, Nick joined the Edery Lab to investigate the genetic and biological basis of naturally selected differences in sleep habits among different types of fruit flies.
